Ecological Restoration of Azuero
Bringing the forest back to the Azuero Peninsula, tree by tree

What is LEAF Wildlife?
LEAF Wildlife is Panama Wildlife Conservation's ecological restoration program. Its goal is to recover degraded land through planting native trees, assisted natural regeneration, and the creation of biological corridors that connect reserves, rivers, and national parks.
The project involves schools, communities, and private landowners to transform fragmented landscapes into functional ecosystems that allow the return of birds, mammals, amphibians, and pollinators. The Azuero Peninsula has lost 98% of its forest cover, making ecological restoration urgent.
Restoring the forest today is the only way biodiversity can return tomorrow.
The crisis of Azuero forests
One of the most deforested regions of Panama requires urgent action to recover its ecosystems
Ecological crisis
Massive loss of forests and biodiversity
The Azuero Peninsula has lost 98% of its original forest cover, becoming one of the most degraded landscapes in Panama. This forest loss creates multiple interconnected crises: climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and vulnerability for rural communities.
98%
of forest cover lost in the Azuero Peninsula
LEAF Wildlife works directly at the heart of this crisis, bringing the forest back tree by tree. The program has its own website (leafwildlife.org) where you can buy native trees online and directly support restoration.
Climate change
Forests capture carbon and regulate local and global climate.
Water scarcity
Forests protect water sources and sustain rivers and streams.
Resilient communities
Communities need forests for sustainable livelihoods.

Azuero has lost 98% of its forests: restoration is urgent and necessary.
Work area
LEAF Wildlife operates in the Azuero Peninsula, one of the most deforested regions of Panama, where ecological restoration is essential for the future of communities and biodiversity.
LEAF Wildlife within PWC's work
LEAF Wildlife is the central axis of Panama Wildlife Conservation's ecological restoration strategy. It connects with all species conservation programs (Ara Panama, Jaguars Without Conflict, Sea Turtles, Pygmy Sloth) by creating and recovering the habitats those species need to survive. Without restoration, species conservation is not sustainable in the long term.
